Bipolar disorder is a disorder of the brain which that causes unusual (and extreme) variations in a person's moods, energy levels and ability to function effectively. It is very different to the normal variations in moods (life's ups and downs) that everyone experiences - it is much more severe than that.
Bipolar disorder was previously referred to as manic depression.
