Q: I would like to ask a question about multivitamins.

I am a 23 male who is active and healthy. Blood test shows I'm not deficient in any vitamins/minerals.

I eat well every day, but I want to know if you recommended taking a multivitamin on the side for good measure?

A: Thank you for a very good question and one which many people may need to know about.

There is no current evidence to suggest that a person who is fit and healthy, is not deficient in any amino acids, vitamins or minerals, has no health disorder requires a multivitamin supplement.

Multivitamins (or single vitamin supplements) are supposed to be used when the diet is deficient of certain nutrients, so that the diet does not provide adequate levels of the various vitamins and minerals and can cause a range of health problems due to the deficiency. In addition to this, people with certain health disorders may be recommended (by their doctor or natural health care provider) to take certain vitamins and/or minerals to help with their specific health condition.

A healthy 23 year old man, who is getting enough portions of the 6 food groups, is getting enough sunshine each day, enough exercise and social interaction, it is not necessary for you to also take a multivitamin.
